“We want to ensure that the rollback and any ensuing redevelopment in these areas are achieved using sound planning and land use principles.”
Meeting the continuing needs of both the Navy and civilians challenges Virginia Beach to balance various concerns: the city and its residents’ strong support of the U.S. Navy, a proud history of providing a home for both Oceana and the thousands of families who serve there, and the preservation of rights that are fundamental to our city and our nation. These issues are critical components to maintaining the fabric of Virginia Beach, and require an innovative approach to achieving the objectives of the BRAC order.
Virginia Beach is committed to complying with the BRAC Commission’s order to control encroachment on NAS Oceana while at the same time protecting the rights of our residents as the city continues to grow.
So, how can we -- at the same time -- meet the requirements of the BRAC Commission order without condemning 3,400 homes? With a clear vision of our future, Virginia Beach needed to find an innovative solution that would meet the terms of the BRAC order and not require the involuntary relocation of the thousands of people who live in those homes.
